Leaning Tower of Pisa

Posted: under EUROPE, Tour & Travel.

Leaning Tower of Pisa
View of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy

The leading tower of Pisa, also known as the Tower of Pisa, is a free standing bell tower next to the Church of the Italian city of Pisa. The Tower is located behind the church and is said to be the third oldest structure in Pisa. The tower was made to stand straight, however immediately after it was constructed, it started leaning towards the south east due to a weekly laid foundation and substrate that allows the foundation to change direction.

The total height of the tower is 186.27 feet from the ground towards the lower side and 186.02 feet on the higher side. Its width from the bottom is measured 13 plus feet and 8 plus feet from the top. The Towers total weight is 14,500 metric tons and has 296/294 steps.

The Tower Of Pisa was made over a period of 177 years in three different sections. The first floor was constructed in the year 1173 and it was in the year 1178 when the tower had the thirds floor, when the tower started to sink. The reason was that a three meter foundation had used unbalanced soil, which actually means that the design was flawed right from the beginning. Then the construction was halted for almost a century as the city was in continuous war and in the mean while, the soil got the time to settle in, else the tower was for sure to topple over. The tower also has a clock that was installed on the third floor.

Las Vegas

Posted: under AMERICA, Tour & Travel.

Las Vegas at Travel-Best-Destinations.com

Known for glitz, glamour, entertainment, debauchery, shopping and excess, the most populated city in the state of Nevada is the largest founded in the twentieth century, and is the gambling center of the United States.

Beginning as a stopover to the pioneer trails to the west Las Vegas became a very popular railway town in the early twentieth century. As the railway was growing and the Hoover Dam was built all it needed is the legalization of gambling to be transformed into the advent of the casino-hotels for which Las Vegas is famous.

Las Vegas at Travel-Best-Destinations.com

In the 1940s several hotel-casinos were built by the two-lane main road leading into Las Vegas from Los Angeles and became home to today’s ‘Strip”. Among other notable buildings from that period was also the Flamingo Hotel with it’s neon signs. In the 1950s the building continued to accelerate – The Desert Inn, the Sahara Hotel, the Sands Hotel, the Royal Nevada…. And the entertainment industry took off.

Las Vegas at Travel-Best-Destinations.com

Entertainment became the reason to visit the city, and in the 1050s became the synonymous with the Rat Pack. Sinatra’s image of all-night singing, dancing, drinking and womanizing brought a new demographic to the Strip. As the Rat Pack charmed America, the Strip continued to expand.

There was a notable decline in tourism in the 1970s and the government decided to clean up their act. In the 1980s the Strip was reborn, the impressive Mirage was built, and the Treasure Island with it’s full scale pirate ship became the newest example of excesses available here.

Then in the 1990s the Excalibur was opened, as the medieval castle which also has non-gambling entertainment for children and the young at heart including court jesters performing in public areas.

The Luxor – a glass pyramid boasting a powerful beam of light shining from its top, as well as a full-scale reproduction of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Its atrium in the middle of the pyramid could hold nine Boeing 747s one a top of another….

Blue Lagoon

Posted: under AMERICA, Tour & Travel.

The Blue Lagoon

The paradise lagoon famous for the 1980’s movie – The Blue Lagoon, is a beautiful unspoiled oasis near the town of San Antonio, Jamaica.

The emerald green waters of the lagoon are being fed by the mineral springs from the Blue Mountains, giving an astonishing feeling of a tropical paradise surrounded by lush and steep hills. While swimming, you can feel the variations of cold and warm streams of water surprising your body.

Even if there are parts where the water is so shallow that you can walk around in it, some parts are more then 50m (180 ft) deep.

There is a restaurant and a shop with a possibility of renting kayaks and diving equipment in the area and for those willing to have an unforgettable experience, the visit to the Somerset Falls is highly advised.

WHEN TO GO
The climate is pretty consistent throughout the year with daily temperatures around 30degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) during the day and around 20 Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) during the night.

WHAT TO SEE
The Somerset Falls is a bit off the track, but is worth to see and to take a trip with a canoe down the clear falls and finally relax in this earthly heaven.

The Mermaid’s rest

Posted: under AMERICA, Tour & Travel.

Huacachina, Peru

Huacachina is a small town – oasis, 5km from Ica, in southwestern Peru. The town is built around the small lake and otherwise completely sorrounded by desert.

It is an extraordinary settlement complete with palm groves, neatly clipped lawns, cafes and a population of over 100 people. It serves as a resort for the local Ica’s families and is an everyday increasing attraction for tourists that  come sandboarding on the nearby dunes.

The small town has restaurants and cafes, and also places to spend the night. Today you can swim and relax in the same place which over thousands of years saved hundreds of lives of weary travellers staggering in from the heath with their mules.

The local legends says that the oasis was created when the beautiful native princess was surprised at her bath by a young hunter. She fled away from him, leaving the pool to become the lagoon. The folds of her mantle, streaming behind her became the surrounding dunes, and the princess herself is said to live still today in the oasis as a mermaid.

Nazca Lines

Posted: under AMERICA, Tour & Travel.

Nazca Lines at Travel-Best-Destinations.com

A series of hundreds of geoglyphs known as the Nazca lines, are located in the Nazca desert in Peru.
The many figures represent from simple forms to much more complex drawings of animals and people, some of which stretch to up to 250m (900ft) in length.

Nazca Lines at Travel-Best-Destinations.com

Since the drawings are almost impossible to be recognized as coherent from the ground, the motivation and the way of building them by the people, were a subject to many speculations.

The drawings persist to the weather because of a very dry climate of the area, and stony ground which prevents the wind to cover them. The light color of the soil beneath the desert crust make a perfect canvas for the artists who during the centuries sent messages to the skies.

Nazca Lines at Travel-Best-Destinations.com

WHAT TO DO
Take a flight above the desert to have the best view of the drawings of the area. Take a walk with a guide through this vast and calm desert.

WHERE IS IT
Between the towns of Nazca and Palpa in Peru.

WHAT IS IT KNOWN FOR
The lines are belived to be a way people tried to communicate with travellers from out of space.

Best Destinations

Posted: under Tour & Travel.

The Yaku Island

Situated about 70km (45mi) south of Kyushu’s southern tip, the small mountainous island of Yakushima amazes the visitors with its breathtaking vegetation ranging from subtropical at sea level to subarctic on the mountain tops.

Thanks also to heavy rainfall, the location is a primeval forest covered area and home to some of the oldest trees in the world, known as the Yaku cedars. With the ancient specimens being around 3500 years old, the biggest among them, known as the Jomon Sugi, is believed to be about 7000 years old.

The cedars, other than considered sacred, are also interesting because of the names and the story that follows them. The phrase Meoto-Sugi means Married Couple and suggests that over the years the once separate trees joined and begun to coexist.

Another thing which will make your eyes pop out, is the Wilson stump . There’s a small stream running through it, you can walk into it and also visit a small shrine inside of it.

Other than the fascinating forests you can enjoy small waterfalls and tropical gardens throughout the area. The site is also a nesting place of endangered species of green and loggerhead turtles, so checkout the Sea Turtle Museum, but also the Yakushima Fruit Garden, and the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Centre.

The Skeleton Coast

The Skeleton Coast conjures up mysterious visions of mist-enshrouded beaches strewn with bleached whalebones and rusted shipwrecks.

Stretching from the south of Namibia up into Angola, the Skeleton Coast is a landscape of haunting beauty. It is a vast area of rolling sand dunes, expanses of uninhabited desert plains, fossil beds, unique geological formations, desert-adapted animals and strange vegetation.

The climate, very atypical of an arid desert, is also surprising. The dense fog, the cold currents offshore and the heat of the desert cause the temperatures to vary  - from 6  to 36 deg. C (42-97 deg. F).

A surprising number of  plants and animals thrive in this harsh conditions. Unusual plants such as the Elephant’s Foot anchor themselves into the rocks. Also, the strong and sturdy oryx feel completely at home in the desert and can stay for weeks withoust water.

Even if it seems that nobody can exist here, on the edge of the desert the Himba tribe copes with life. If you are fortunate enough to visit the Skeleton coast you won’t easily forget this immense walk back through time.

Colosal Mystery Jars

The beautiful grassy meadows and the rolling brown and purple hills that mark the large plateau in the north-east Laos, reveal mysterious groupings of large stone jars scattered around in dozens of sites.

Believed to be about 2000 years old, the jars weigh from about 600kg (1300lb) to 1 tonne. Some of them even have stone lids lying nearby. Many theories about their purpose have been advanced during the years, but since the area was a frequent war site for the decades that have passed, they still remain a mystery.

The largest of the jars weighs about 6 tonnes. Among other theories they’re been thought of as storage vessels or possibly funerary urns. Some local legends say that they were made to ferment the rice wine needed to celebrate victory over a cruel chieftain.

Because of frequent wars the area is still not free of unexploded ordnance, and only the main three jar sites are considered safe to visit with the experienced guides. If you plan to visit, be sure to stay on the footpaths!

Superman’s Cave

Buried a thousand feet (300 meters) below Naica mountain in the Chihuahuan Desert, this astonishing cave was discovered by two miners only in the year 2000.

A sort of south-of-the-border Fortress of Solitude, Mexico’s Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of Crystals) contains some of the world’s largest known natural crystals – translucent beams of gypsum as long as 36 feet (11 meters).

Mexico Crystal Cave Travel-Best-Destinations.Com

New studies report that for millennia the crystals thrived in the cave’s extremely rare and stable natural environment. Temperatures hovered consistently around a steamy 136 degrees Fahrenheit (58 degrees Celsius), and the cave was filled with mineral-rich water that drove the crystals’ growth.

Modern-day mining operations exposed the natural wonder by pumping water out of the cave, which eventualy was found near the town of Delicias.

Mexico Crystal Cave Travel-Best-Destinations.Com

The Cave of Crystals is a horseshoe-shaped cavity in limestone rock about 30 feet (10 meters) wide and 90 feet (30 meters) long.

The volcanic activity that began about 26 million years ago created Naica mountain and filled it with high-temperature anhydrite.

Mexico Crystal Cave Travel-Best-Destinations.Com

When magma underneath the mountain cooled and the temperature dropped, the anhydrite began to dissolve. The anhydrite slowly enriched the waters with sulfate and calcium molecules, which for millions of years have been deposited in the caves in the form of huge selenite gypsum crystals.

Mexico Crystal Cave Travel-Best-Destinations.Com

The 400-foot-deep (120-meter-deep) Cave of Swords is closer to the surface than the Cave of Crystals. While there are more crystals in the Cave of Swords, they are far smaller, typically about a yard (a meter) long. Their relative compactness is likely due to a rapid temperature decline, as opposed to the far more gradual change that is believed to have encouraged the megacrystals in the deeper cave.

There is a debate today about what to do with the caves – to close the mine and make the cave available so future generations may admire the crystals, or to stop pumping the water and let the scenario to the natural origin – allowing the crystals to regrow…

Mexico Crystal Cave Travel-Best-Destinations.Com

This is not a standard type destination I’m used to write about, but the photos and the astonishing resemblance to the superman’s cave tempted me to share this location with you.

The Pursuit of Happiness

Two years ago I was visiting New York for a few months and tasted its life, magnificence and greatness.  Among other famous New York landmarks are also the Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Being close to each other, but also because of their close symbolic connection, they often happen to be mentioned together.

The Statue of Liberty is a present from the people of France to the people of the United States in recognition of their friendship established during the American Revolution. The statue was built by the two famous French artists of that time – Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and the Eiffel Tower designer – Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. The statue was completed in France and then shipped and assembled in New York by 1886. The Statue of Liberty was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986 and today stands proudly as the reminder of the American ideals of freedom, liberty, life and the pursuit of happiness.

The small Ellis Island, located in the shadow of The Statue of Liberty, has played a significant role in shaping the United States. It served as the entrance portal and a dream of a better life in the United States for more than 12 million people in a range of about 60 years.  During the nineteenth century the political instability and famine in Europe,   have caused the largest mass migration in human history. That’s why Ellis Island was made the first federal immigration station in order to handle the growing number of people coming from Europe in their search for the American dream.

Because of such a large number of people that had to be processed the inspections had to be very quick but still very   thorough. There were numerous diseases and conditions that banned people from entering the States, and people were sent back to their homes.  These rather dramatic and sad moments that often separated families were described in different movies, but visiting the today’s Ellis Island complex you can easily live and explore how it was to be an immigrant during those times. Different medical instruments, photographs and other items are being displayed, as the examples of different tests immigrants had to pass in order to be accepted into the States.

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on Travel-Best-Destinations.Com

The location is a true peak to the past times. Maybe even someone from your family passed all of that fuss so that you can live as you do today.

WHAT ARE THEY KNOWN FOR
They are symbols of the American ideal of freedom, liberty and justice for all.

WHAT ARE THEY
They are monuments serving as the gateway to America.

WHERE ARE THEY
The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are located on the easten coast of the United States of America and are a part of the giant New Your City harbour.

WHAT TO DO
There are computer terminals on Ellis Island for you to check names of people who entered the United States through this busy port. Try to see if you can find your long lost relative.

Accomodation & Lodging in Cape Town

Posted: under AFRICA, Hotel.

Cape Town has a wide range of accommodation on offer from five-star luxury hotels, to guesthouses, B&B’s and backpackers lodges as well as many self-catering options – from apartments to designer villa’s. Prices vary considerably depending on location as well as seasonally. You may be able to take advantage of lower rates in the ‘off-season’ months of April – September. Accommodation on the Atlantic Seaboard (Camp’s Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay) is generally more expensive than on the False Bay coastline while luxury hotels in the city bowl and waterfront areas are expensive but offer world-class accommodation. For more intimate accommodation, many travellers enjoy the charm and hospitality of the smaller boutique hotels and guesthouses.

Steenberg Country Hotel
The beautiful setting at the Steenberg Country Hotel in the Constantia Valley

To search for and book accommodation in Cape Town and the Western Cape, visit  www.RoomsForAfrica.com

The majority of tourist attractions in Cape Town are easily accessible regardless of where you choose to stay. If restaurants, shopping and nightlife are your preference – accommodation in the Waterfront or City Bowl is ideal. For beautiful beaches along with some glitz and glamour head for the Atlantic Seaboard while for a family orientated beach holiday consider the Constantia Valley or the False Bay coastline suburbs such as Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town. Hout Bay offers a more rustic retreat while still in close proximity to all major attractions. And, for a few days of relaxtion and wine tasting the historic towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are well worth a visit.

PEAK SUMMER SEASON: When planning a visit to Cape Town, bear in mind that the December/January period is the busiest time of the year with both locals and foreigners making the most of their summer holidays. It is best to make accommodation bookings as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment. February remains a busy holiday month – as does the Easter holiday period.
